Sedentary Jobs Have Risen 83% Since The 1950s In America

Americans Are Sitting More Today Than At Any Other Time In History And It's Killing Us

According to Forbes The average American adult sits more than at any time in history.  In an article published on their website on March 6th, 2019, they described how sedentary jobs have increased 83% since 1950 according to the American Heart Association.

By sitting for long periods of time, we are becoming fatter, increasing our blood pressure, developing high cholesterol, risking stroke and dramatically increasing our risk of premature death from cancers and heart disease. Research shows that the more we sit, the thinner the regions of our brains become - associated to where our memories are stored.  This can lead to reduced cognition and many dangerous long-term effects for aging brains, but data also shows that it leads to increased rates of depression and anxiety.

You are more than twice as likely to develop cardiovascular disease if you sit for 6 or more hours a day than if you don't.  It was also proven in a 2011 study,  that body's insulin response declines after just one day of prolonged sitting.

What are you doing to minimize your time sitting?  There are some solutions.  My sales manager survived a heart attack a few years ago, in his 40s, and he opted for a standing desk.  In the sales profession, we could end up sitting for hours and hours all day long sometimes.  The more you get up and move to interrupt your sitting the better.

The most shocking thing about studies on prolonged sitting, is the fact that researchers concluded that the amount of exercise one did, after sitting for 6+ hours a day, had little to no effect on reducing their risks for serious health effects caused by sitting.  Surprisingly, your workout at the gym after sitting in front of your devices all day, does not offset or reduce the damage that was done to your body and your health.  It's the long-term accumulation of sitting each day that is dangerous.  So it's critical to develop habits that get you moving more throughout the day.

One solution we've come up with is a specialized chair that will be connected to IoT technology and will alert you whenever you've been sitting for too long.  This way, you will be reminded to get up and move around more, which in turn will protect your long-term health and hopefully reduce deaths related to heart disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes that have been directly tied to prolong sitting.  You can learn more by reading this study published by the American Cancer Society in 2018 in the Journal of Epidemiology.
